I aways thought that the DLC was a trojan horse for neoconservatism in the democratic party. NeoConservatives also idolize FDR (the great wartime president), and could care less about the direction of domestic policy (other than faith based initiatives) as long as they get their way in foreign policy.

Wiki entry on the DLC

The DLC gave strong support for the 2003 invasion of Iraq. Prior to the war, Will Marshall co-signed a letter to President Bush from the Project for the New American Century endorsing military action against Saddam Hussein. During the 2004 Primary campaign the DLC attacked Presidential candidate Howard Dean as an out-of-touch liberal because of Dean’s position of only pursuing Osama Bin Laden instead of invading Iraq. The DLC dismissed other critics of the Iraq invasion such as filmmaker Michael Moore as “Anti-American” and members of the “loony left” [7]. Even as domestic support for the Iraq War plummeted in 2004 and 2005, Marshall called upon Democrats to balance their criticism of Bush’s handling of the Iraq War with praise for the President’s achievements and cautioned “Democrats need to be choosier about the political company they keep, distancing themselves from the pacifist and anti-American fringe.”

ABOUT WILL MARSHALL

Will Marshall is president and founder of the Progressive Policy Institute (PPI), a center for policy innovation in Washington, D.C. Established in 1989, PPI’s mission is to “modernize progressive politics and government for the 21st century.” (sic)

IN 1985, Marshall helped to found the Democratic Leadership Council, serving as its first Policy Director. He worked with Members of Congress and other elected officials -including Bill Clinton, DLC chairman in 1990-1991—to establish the DLC as the premier forum for policy and political debate within the national Democratic Party. He is Editor at Large of Blueprint, the DLC’s journal of politics and policy.

Called “Bill Clinton’s idea mill,” PPI’s policy analysis and proposals were the source for many of the “New Democrat” themes that figured prominently in national politics during the 1990s. The Institute also has been integral to the spread of so called “Third Way” thinking to center-left parties in Europe and elsewhere. Marshall serves on the board of Policy Network, an international think tank launched by Tony Blair to promote progressive policy ideas throughout the democratic world.
